New trainer joins Pioneer athletics
The fomer Assistant Athletic Trainer and Strength Conditoning Coach Michell Raube, was hired at Delta in 2008. Raube was named Athletic Director in 2011 and continued her duties as trainer.
“I held that position for two and a half years, and the college did their best to fill the needs of athletic trainers do part-time work and strength and condition to part-time work to help me, Raube said.
Although Raube enjoyed the dual role, she did know that one day she would have to relinquish some of her duties.
The transition opened up a full time position for a Head Athletic Trainer/Strength and Conditioning coach. Taking over the new position is Maggie Davidson.
“This past year the college thought it was in the best interest for me to become just the athletic director so I can focus 100 percent on that,” Raube said. “It will free me up to do a lot more for the athletic program here at Delta College and get out in the community and just be there for the student athletes with their academics and other things like that.”
Davidson has always been involved in sports. As a high school student at small Walkerville Public School on the west side of the state, she played basketball, softball, and volleyball.
Originally Davidson planned to go into nursing because her high school didn’t have an athletic trainer for any events. She was introduced to Athletic Training while attending SVSU.
“I found athletic training which was a good mixture for me between athletics and healthcare,” Davidson said, “so it was a perfect fit.”
Davidson applied for the position with Delta after her internship with the Detroit Tigers. Her duties with the Tigers’ players included icing bumps and bruises, taping limbs, therapy, as well as working with the team’s team physicians.
“I learned a lot there,” Davidson said, “It was definitely an experience.”
This new arrangement of responsibility will be an asset to the athletic department according to both Raube and Davidson
“I love being the athletic director because I feel I can influence the lives of our student athletes here and really get them to understand the value of what it means to be a student first and what it means to give back to the community,” she said. “I do miss being the trainer and strength coach, that is my passion; I love being involved with them in the weight room.”
Davidson said she is very excited to have this opportunity Delta College has provided her.
“I have always really like it here, I liked the atmosphere I liked the job, just everything in general,” Davidson said.
