Summer program available for struggling math students
David Redman, Math Division Chair, and Nate Blecke, Professor of Mathematics presented their plan for the 2014 summer Math Booster to the Board of Trustees on March 18.
Math Booster is a two-week program, free for students, aimed at moving students up a level or completely out of developmental math courses.
Redman said their mission is to assess, advance and create pathways for students.
In 2013, six students who participated in the Math Booster were moved out of developmental math courses. Blecke said, of those who participated in the Math Booster in 2013, 88 percent improved placement and 72 percent passed the next math course they took.
Redman and Blecke said they have received many positive comments from students in regard to Math Booster.
This year, the Math Booster will consist of three-hour sessions, five days a week, at Delta’s main campus and Ricker Center. Students who advance during the first week will participate in both weeks.
Board member Bob Emrich thanked Redman and Blecke, saying he was moved by their presentation.
“The name of the game is having people succeed, and this is a classic example of us doing something very tangible to make sure people succeed,” said Emrich.
