March Madness food drive in full swing this week

On March 23, 2014

The fourth annual March Madness food drive starts today, Monday, March 24, lasting through Saturday, March 29.

Brigit Dyer, Colleen Wilson-Rood and Jennifer Duncan make up the March Madness Committee.

Professors are encouraged to ask their students to bring in non-perishable, non-expired food items to be donated to the Delta College Food Pantry. Suggested items include shelf-safe fruit, granola bars, microwavable meals, tuna and spaghetti.

Every individual food item counts as one point. A six-pack of granola bars, for example, would count as six points.

The March Madness Committee’s goal is to collect 10,000 points worth of items for the Delta College Food Pantry.

Classes are asked to drop their donations off as a group to the LLIC.

Students can also donate money. Every dollar donated counts as three points. Students are asked to send any money to one of the committee members and include their name, course number, section and class size.

The winner will be the class with the highest average number of points per students.

The Delta Collegiate will recognize the winning class. The winning class will also be awarded a food party and individual certificates of achievement.

Duncan encourages students to participate if they can.

“It’s a great way for students to be involved in the Delta College community,” said Duncan.

Duncan said some students are in a situation where they have to choose between things such as gas for their car or medication and eating. She noted the importance of eating breakfast and eating before taking a test.

“People can’t learn their best if they’re hungry,” said Duncan. “We want students to be as successful as possible.”
