Judy Miller retires after nearly 40 years

After 38 years at Delta College, Dean of Students Judy Miller is saying goodbye.

Miller began her career at Delta in 1976. She started out as a secretary in the Conference Development Office, she was also a tutor and an adjunct math instructor.

“From the time I was a child, I always thought I would be a teacher,” said Miller.

Miller graduated from Bay City Central High School in 1970. She proceeded to earn her Bachelor of Science in Education (Theatre/Math) and her Master of Arts in Math, both from Central Michigan University.

In 1983, after completing her Master’s degree, she was promoted to be a full-time math instructor, eventually becoming a math professor, which is the highest rank possible for instructors at Delta. She served as the Math Division Chair from 1999 to 2001.

Miller said she loved teaching math at Delta.

“I liked being able to turn the light on for some students, to the benefits, not just in the classroom with math, but what it could do for them in real life,” said Miller.

After focusing on math for over 20 years, Miller became Dean of Academic Administration in 2001. She then became Dean of Learning Support Services in 2003, followed by Dean of Students in Academic Services in 2011. Since 2013, she has served as Dean of Students.

Since leaving the math division as full-time faculty, Miller has continued to teach the occasional math course.

Miller said working on the administrative side has been “a growth experience.”

“I like now trying to make things easier for students,” said Miller. “It’s kind of fun when student problems come to me and I get to help find a solution for an issue that a student is having.”

Miller said she will miss the people at Delta the most. She said she is planning on coming back to teach part-time.12
