Golf team’s tee off delayed by soggy weather
Delta’s golf team is off to a late start, due to the wet spring weather. Four matches have been canceled so far due to soggy golf courses. The team also was not able to make their spring trip this year, because the courses were still wet.
“Obviously we’d prefer warm weather, but more importantly than that we need the courses to dry out,” said golf coach Charles Lord.
If the weather’s improved enough the first game of the season will be Friday, April 11. The team plans to have a practice match against Oakland, but if that’s not possible they do have a backup game lined up.
“It is what it is,” said Lord. “You can’t play if the weather won’t let you.”
Lord said that he hopes for some good weather moving forward, and is eager to get the golf season underway.
“Golf is one of those sports that you’re dependant on the weather,” said Lord. “If the weather’s decent you’re going to get some good scores. If the weathers not very good, then you’re going to get some horrendous scores. We’re just hoping for some good weather to come by and stick around.”
The team has six players and two extras. The scores of the extras don’t count for the game, but they help the coach to position the players on the team.
Delta’s home course is Bay Valley Golf Course. This season’s team captains are sophomores Devin Young and Phil Ott.
Delta does not have a separate team for men and women, and compete in an all mens Leauge.
However both men and women can participate, even though the team is listed under men’s sports. The golf team currently has only male players.
“It’s listed under men’s because thats where we compete,” said Lord. “[The women on the team] would compete just like they were men, then at the end of the season, be in a completely different tournament.”
Anyone interested in joining the team for next year can contact Lord at ctlord@delta.edu.
