Social media expert joins library staff
Status updates, liking posts and commenting on videos are something the majority of Delta College’s student body does on a daily basis. The friends list is always full and someone is there to chat, and soon the Delta College library may be sending you a friend request.
With our fast-paced digital age getting faster, the Delta library recently added Colleen Kothbauer to their staff. Kothbauer is currently in training to become a social networking master who will oversee the newly planned social networking pages for the Delta library.
Before working at Delta, Kothbauer had several years of experience as a librarian. She has worked as a children’s librarian at Hoyt Public Schools and Grace A. Dow. In addition, Kothbauer has volunteered to create webpages for various nonprofits, including Saginaw’s Survivors of Suicide.
She said she’s not a social media expert yet, but the library is quickly moving forward, and after her training, she will be more in the know.
“Once (Library Director) Jack Wood is done with me, I’ll be an expert,” she said with a chuckle.
The library plans to utilize Facebook, Twitter and Instagram to connect with students. After noticing most businesses have a social media page, Delta’s library decided they could utilize the same techniques in our fast-growing digital age.
“Some people don’t even order pizza over the phone anymore,” said Kothbauer.
She hopes having some type of live chat system along with social networking strategies will be convenient for students.
“Some students have questions and may not want to walk to the desk,” said Kothbauer. “So they can always ask through our new pages.”
