Student poets compete in poetry slam
The Delta Night Garden Poetry Club held their first poetry slam last Thursday evening.
Five judges were selected randomly from the audience. They judged the poems on a scale of 1-10, 10 being the best.
Five students competed in the slam, each reading two poems. Three students also read one poem each during open-mic, and these poems were not judged.
Placing first was Devante Marselis, second was Erin Dachsteiner and third place was Bryan Haiser.
The Delta Night Garden Poetry Club currently has eight active members. They are looking to recruit more. Hayley Durham, president of the club, said she loves poetry and what the club and poetry slams allow her to do.
“Poetry’s important to me because it allows me to express things I can’t verbalize,” said Durham, 18, of Hemlock. “It’s as natural as using a fork to eat with for me.”
Delta Night Garden Poetry member Aleksis Landers, 20, of Saginaw, also appreciates being involved in the club.
“I have studied writing for a long time and I find it to be a very good creative outlet,” said Landers.
The club meets every Wednesday in the Red Brix at 12:30 p.m. to write together.
The next poetry slam will be on April 10 in S-105. Sign up begins at 5:30 p.m., with the slam beginning at 6 p.m. Contact JodiAnn Stevenson at jodiannstevenson@delta.edu or Hayley Durham at hayleydurham@delta.edu for more information on the poetry slam or the Delta Night Garden Poetry Club.
