The Delta College baseball team made a trip to Florida over spring break, and returned with a 7-3 record in the pre-season tournament. According to head coach Dan Smith, the team is prepared and excited to get started with regular season games.
“I could not be more ready to get the season started with these guys,” Smith said. “Where else could you find leadership, communication, goal setting, organization, work ethic, self-discipline, perseverance, cooperation, loyalty, honesty, perspective, fun and relationships rolled up in one and practice them daily? After our big win in Florida, who isn’t ready to get the season started?”
Games in Florida included match-ups against ASA College with 3 losses of 17-0, 4-1 and 10-9, Jackson College with a win of 6-3, Benedictine Springfield with a win of 4-3, Trine with a win of 9-3, Mesabi Range CTC with two wins of 4-1 and 13-8, Ste. Lawrence with a win of 12-0 and Coe College with a win of 10-0.
Regular games began on March 27 against Rochester and they are looking for fans to come support them.
“We will continue to do everything we can to make our fans’ game experience as enjoyable as possible,” Smith said. “Granted, we do not have a field on campus and have to travel 10 miles for our ‘home’ games but our fans understand and we work hard to give our guys a college experience.”
The team plays at Harvey Randall Wickes Recreational Complex in Saginaw Township.
Smith said he has huge expectations for his team this season and is hopeful for some postseason victories.
“I would expect our team to have a solid season. I can see us competing for a MCCAA regular season title and post-season berth, but in order to do so we need to stay consistent, trust the system and get a little bit of luck,” Smith said.
